Practice in Transformative Action (PiTA)

Transformative potential is defined as levels of consciousness and action that produce the potential to transform contextual factors and relationships perpetuating inequitable conditions and that are necessary for change at one or more socio-ecosystemic levels.

The Practice in Transformative Action (PiTA) program is an award-winning yearlong program of the East Bay Meditation Center. The program is aimed at supporting individuals as they foster transformative inner and outer change by bringing mindfulness-awareness practices into their work with progressive social change organizations, coalitions, and social movements. PiTA was created to support anyone leaning toward social change and social justice, community and volunteer work, transformative thought leadership, and anyone who may not think of themselves as activists, but who are agents of change nevertheless. Participants are encouraged to take practices of inner awareness (mindfulness meditation) into their spheres of activity, and to ground themselves in a Vow Not to Burn Out created by EBMC guiding teacher, Mushim Ikeda.

After spending an amazing year as a participant in the PiTA6 cohort, I supported the community as an Apprentice Teacher for the seventh and eight year of the program.
